Meeting Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Marthinus van Schalkwyk

Last night I attended the annual celebration of the Chinese Revolution at the Sandton Sun Hotel. The event was formal and everyone was wearing expensive suits and the (mostly Chinese) ladies beautiful dresses. My good friends Selwyn and Italo from the Preview Theatre invited me along. I also met Richard and Francis from my Table Tennis Club. Later on my met a new friend Diamond Singlima Si who represents the Taiwanese Independence Party. There is a long history of conflict over the independence of Taiwan from mainland China.

As I entered the Sandton Sun Hotel I spotted Tony Leon, leader of the Democratic Alliance, behind me. I didn’t see him again later on but looked forward to meeting more “important” people. After hooking up with Diamond we prowled the room to find “important” people to meet. We soon ran into Marthinus van Schalkwyk aka “Kortbroek“, the leader of the New National Party. The highlight of the even was talking briefly with the pious Mangosuthu Buthelezi, leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

Talent paying the price for crime

Chad Saaiman R&B singerIt came as a blow when we learned about the botched hijacking in Johannesburg of R&B singer Chad Saaiman yesterday. This is sadly a common occurrence in Gauteng where about 50% of South Africa’s crime takes place . Still, knowing it happened to a soulful singer, who moved from Cape Town, to seek fame and fortune in Joburg, is sad indeed. He is one of the few South African artists whose style and music appeals to a broad cross section of society.  It is quite ironic that this should happen to Chad, who moved to a new city for better prospects, only to have his dreams almost shattered by this crime.

Everyone in South Africa is sick and tired of the high levels of crime in our country. It affects all of us directly or indirectly in some way. Thousands of people from all backgrounds live in fear of their safety on a daily basis. One wonders what other effects does this out of control crime has on our national psyche and progress as a developing country. Crime prevention groups from poor and rich backgrounds work together with the police to curb crime and yet results are slow. Community policing forums have gone a long way to help boost the crime fighting. We commend  ordinary heroes who help to bring crime down on a daily basis, as demonstrated statistically on the SAPS website where crime has decreased from the 2009 to the 2010 period.

However, car-jackings continue being the highest level in the city of Johannesburg, compared to major cities across the country. Although car-jacking reports went down from 2009, this number is still high. This is worrisome, as Johannesburg is the economic centre of South Africa. Car-jacking occurs the most in the Gauteng province, with 53% of all car-jackings during the April 2009 to March 2010, followed by KZN with 27% and with the Western Cape as the fifth most at 0.4%. In Johannesburg central, car-jacking is at 127 during 2009-2010 and at 10 in Cape Town central during the same period. There are even truck hi-jackings in Johannesburg but none in Cape Town over the past 7 years. Both cities have a high level of poverty, so I assume it is the culture of bling in Johannesburg and the need for status that is spurring young men to commit these heinous crimes.

Something really needs to be done to curb the level of car-jackings in an internationally recognised city such as Johannesburg. This event might deter future international investors from our entertainment industry. Artists such as Beyonce exposed our dance culture on an international level, by using pantsula moves and South African dancers on her latest music video. It is a concept new and fresh to the international music community. We hope that this incident won’t deter artists such as Beyonce from collaborating with local artists like Chad Saaiman.

Investigative Reporter interviews Thomas Jefferson!

A MAJOR RADIO EVENT! AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER INTERVIEWS THOMAS JEFFERSON!

When: Wednesday, June 15, 7-8 PM, Eastern Time

Where: www.ProgressiveRadioNetwork.com

Scholar Clay Jenkinson, who has portrayed, with stunning accuracy, Thomas Jefferson, in venues all over the world, will assume the identity once more, for a sit-down interview with Jon Rappoport, Pulitzer-nominated reporter.

“Mr. Jefferson,” in character, will answer Jon’s questions about life in 2011, from his 18th-century perspective.

“I wish we had three hours,” Jon stated, “but we’ll squeeze in everything we can in one hour.”

What is Jefferson’s view of where America has gone in two centuries? Is it still a Republic? Should it be? How can a Constitution designed to fit fewer than three million citizens apply to a population of 300 million? Do even the rights and powers of individual states make sense, when one state, California, has 37 million residents? What about the national health-care plan? The state of public education? Mega-corporate influence? Two political parties with common agendas? The military-industrial complex? The Federal Reserve? Invasive surveillance?

The questions pile up.

This will be an intriguing and riveting hour of radio-a unique experience.

To pick up the show live: www.ProgressiveRadioNetwork.com and click on “listen live.” To access the show in the archive, and scroll down to The Jon Rappoport Show.

Clay Jenkinson is the director of the Dakota Institute and the founder of the Theodore Roosevelt Center. A humanities scholar, he is the host of the nationally syndicated radio show, The Thomas JeffersonHour.

Jon Rappoport has worked as an investigative reporter for 35 years. He has published articles on politics, health, and media for LAWeekly, CBS Healthwatch, Spin Magazine, Stern, and is the author of Logic and Analysis, a course for high-school students.

Queensland Flood – Appeal to Youtube

My friend Anthony Larter sent me this on email. Even though I’ve never been to Australia I’m posting this message because over 100,000 people have been affected by these floods. South African weather bureau has also predicted floods in different parts of South Africa. Someone on Twitter recently mentioned 2010 was the hottest and wettest year in the history of the world – it’s probably better to say since weather patterns have been recorded in the last few 100 years or so.

My friend, Ryan created this video last night as an appeal to YouTube to donate all the revenue earned by the advertisements they force us to watch when opening a YouTube video. Since there are hundreds of
videos arriving on YT from the Queensland floods, we thought that we’d appeal to them to donate all the money to the Premier Flood Appeal account. We’re hoping that by sending this video around to everybody
we know (even if they don’t live in Australia or are affected) so that we can get as many views as possible, so they take notice.

Please help out our Australian friends by forwarding this link to everyone you know.

I am Proudly South African!

Robin Banks Mind Power Motivational SpeakerToday I am sharing an important message from my fellow motivational speaker, Robin Banks. A few years ago I attended one of his free Mind Power workshops and was completely blown away by his confidence and ability to get people excited. He has an incredible way of creating high energy experiences similar to Tony Robbins. Anyway in 2007 we met while both of us attended Dr John Demartini’s Breakthrough Experience.

Here’s Robin’s message…

We are less than 8 days away from the beginning of one of the most exciting events this country has ever experienced and it’s absolutely awesome to feel the buzz in South Africa. The roads are coming together nicely, our airports are world class and I honestly believe we are ready to host an Outstanding World Cup!

I have had the privilege of working with ACSA (Airports Company South Africa), preparing all the airport staff to give the world the most Awesome South African welcome. I have seen many of the countries stadiums and travel to most cities on a regular basis, so I speak from personal experience when I say, ”We are Ready” and I am Proud of my country. Everywhere you go there are South African flags being flown, my car has mirror flags and two on the back windows as well. If you haven’t got flags I would strongly encourage you to get behind our country and buy some. You can go into any Mini dealership and they will give you mirror flags for free. Don’t procrastinate, Just Do it!

Earth Hour

All South Africans residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in Earth Hour on Saturday 27 March 2010 by switching off all lights for one hour, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. Earth Hour is a WWF initiative and is a symbolic act aimed at creating awareness that climate change threatens lives, livelihoods and lifestyles and galvanizing support to pressure governments to combat climate change.

The ten warmest years on record have all occurred since 1990. In 2009, an estimated 1 billion people from over 4 000 cities across the world took part in Earth Hour. Supported by local celebrities like The Parlourtones, Jo-Ann Strauss, Ryk Neethling and Marc Lottering, Earth Hour 2010 is proud to have Archbishop Tutu as their patron once again. As comedian Lottering says “There’s nothing funny about climate change It will ultimately affect all of us in a bad way if we don’t consciously act.

This year South Africans will once again have the opportunity to join the rest of the world in doing something positive – turn your lights off on Saturday, 27th March at 20h30 for one hour.”

Jacob Zuma wedding photos

While people reacted in strange and interesting ways, I found great pleasure in our country’s president celebrating in marriage in the traditional Zulu way. It really is my belief that when we look back in history Zuma will be judged a much better president than Thabo Mbeki.

Missing Children SA – We need your help…

Missing Children SA – We need your help…

From Judy Botes @ Missing Children SA

missing children saFor the December holidays 22 children were reported missing to Missing Children SA. Fortunately – together with SAPS – 19 of these children have been recovered. Since official statistics were started in 1994 OVER 900 OF THE CHILDREN REPORTED MISSING IN SOUTH AFRICA, HAVE NOT BEEN RECOVERED. Experts believe that this number will increase this year, especially with the upcoming 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.

Unfortunately the reality is that the recession is taking its toll, not only on corporates, but on charities, like us, as well.

YOU CAN HELP!

Your donation – no matter how small – will assist us in continuing our efforts to find missing children. HELP US BRING OUR MISSING CHILDREN BACK HOME!

Democratic Alliance leads elections race in Internet performance

An in-depth analysis of the Internet strategy of the main political parties in South Afrca’s 2009 general elections reveals that the Democratic Alliance has a substantial lead in online performance over its rivals. The African National Congress comes in a distant second, narrowly ahead of the Congress of the People. The United Democratic Movement and Independent Democrats, in turn, are well behind COPE, while the Inkatha Freedom Party trails so far behind, its web presence is described as “damaging”.

The first formal web site benchmarking survey of South African political parties was released today by World Wide Worx, which uses its Webagility system to evaluate and benchmark web site usability and strategy of companies, organisations and institutions in South Africa and globally.

The Webagility system breaks the analysis down into several modules, including usability, social media, campaign effectiveness, and content strategy. Each module contains up to 30 micro-elements, which are each assigned a score, providing a detailed measure of overall effectiveness of online presence. Webagility has been used to analyse sites for clients as diverse as major retailers, banks, bookstores, the City of Jo’burg, SA Revenue Services, the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants and Wits University.

“The DA site achieves only an average score from a usability point of view, but their content strategy sets them apart,” says Steven Ambrose, manage director of WWW Strategy, which conducts the Webagility analyses on behalf of World Wide Worx. Ambrose heads up the Webagility team of analysts. “Benchmarked against global best practise, the DA scores 81% on content strategy, against 64% by the ANC and 60% by COPE.”

In usability, the DA score drops to 69%, while the ANC is consistent at 63% and COPE drops to 57%. Campaign effectiveness sees similar ratings for the DA, at 65%, while the ANC scores only 48%, COPE 45% and the UDM comparing well with these at 43%.

The much vaunted use of social media like blogging, Facebook and YouTube by the political parties is revealed by the analysis to lag behind global best practise. While the DA still leads substantially here, its benchmarked score drops to 69%. The ANC plummets to 47% and COPE 43%.

“The difference lies not so much in what they are doing, but in how they are doing it,” says Ambrose. “The ANC have clearly invested heavily in their online presence, and their YouTube site looks most impressive at first sight. But it is put to very poor use, with uninspiring content, and little opportunity for voter engagement. The DA, on the other hand, has spent less money on the Internet, but scores far higher due to the direct engagement of its own representatives. Their blogs are not only relevant, but interesting, so it comes across as real engagement rather than a public relations exercise.”

The overall Webagility scores of the major parties, benchmarked against global best practice, are:

  • DA: 76%
  • ANC: 61%
  • COPE: 56%
  • UDM: 43%
  • ID: 32%
  • IFP: 23%

“The poor performance of the IFP web site, which our system characterises as ‘potentially damaging’, is a reflection of the reality that the IFP does not expect its target voter audience to be found among Internet users,” says Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx. “It is probably not vote-effective for them to spend too much energy online. The ID’s performance is more a reflection of poor understanding of online strategy, with its leader famous for her attacks on blogs.”

Goldstuck adds that the DA has clearly done its homework on the Obama campaign in the USA, which set the standard globally for embracing the Internet in political campaigning.

Says Goldstuck, “We have nothing like that kind of sophistication in South Africa, but lessons are being learned fast.”

A PowerPoint presentation summarising the Webagility analysis can be downloaded at the World Wide Worx web site.

What’s the purpose of getting engaged before marriage?

I have never been married so this post is completely biased. However, I’ve been to many weddings like most people have in their lifetimes. And in 3 cases I have been best man, twice to cousins and once to a best friend from school. I’m not sure if they were engaged but I assume they were because it’s such an excepted part of the wedding rituals. Anyway I received the following email from an American lady…
