Energy is created by you not your gadgets

One of the downsides of living in a technological age is we tend to attribute the most powerful energies to machines. Therefore, we downplay our own. This is a major joke. Things aren’t that way at all. We have an extraordinary ability to project energy.” Jon Rappoport

Switch off from gadgets technology devicesThis quote really is the essence of the work that I’m moving towards. It is not that difficult to see that gadgets use energy and I don’t mean electricity – I mean YOUR energy. When you watch hours of television, do you feel more energized or less? When you work on your laptop for hours, do you feel more focussed or less? Living your life through the screen is like being plugged into the Matrix.

You get more excited about the comment or poke, than you do about a phone call from your best friend. Validation seeking or supplication has been taken to new heights on social networks. I don’t profess to be advocating abstinence or absconding. Instead I always find the middle ground to be more empowering.

So what is the middle ground when using social networking? It may be switching off on some days and moving away from the always-on culture. The messages in your Inbox are never more important then going inside yourself. It’s only when the voice and the vision on the inside becomes more load and clear, that’s when you begin to master your life according to Dr John Demartini. This is a fancy way of saying that what you think about yourself, and the world around you, is more important than what others think or say about it.

Try not watching any news for a month. You may feel disconnected in the beginning. However, as you progress on this journey, you feel a sense of freedom. You no longer care about what’s happening between two countries on the other side of the world. This has no direct impact on your daily life, and you also feel less guilt. There’s no need to get excited or stressed about starving Somalia’s or war in Iraq because your own life is more important.

You cannot be who you are when your thoughts are contaminated with the beliefs of what other people think are important. So switching off from cell phones or the Internet is one sure way to energise your life. There was and always will be people who cannot live without their gadgets. You don’t have to be one of them. You have the power inside you to say “No!” and then to walk away. Being a zombie trapped in a digital dungeon can never be as much fun as the feeling you have when you rush to or from the waves on the beach or the sense of awe when you reach the top of a hill when hiking.

Switching off allows you’re the time to do something else in the real world. Take this first step into the brave new world.

Jane Goodall: The inspirational true story of one woman who moved the world

Ramon Thomas meets Jane Goodall at TEDGlobal in Tanzania, 2007In 2007 I was fortunate to meet Jane Goodall at the TEDGlobal Conference in Arusha, Tanzania. So seeing this premier information I immediately shared it with friends. Free fundraising premier for South Africa

By advancing our awareness of – and fighting for the preservation of chimpanzees, this remarkable woman has given humans a greater understanding – not only of primates, but of ourselves.

The Jane Goodall Institute of South Africa and Ster-Kinekor Theatres will be hosting a premiere of the uplifting documentary on Dr Jane Jane Goodall, “Jane’s Journey,” on February 8 2011 at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank.

Tickets to the premiere are free although guests will be required to make a donation of any value to The Jane Goodall Institute on entry to the premiere. Guests also have the opportunity participate in an auction of JGI rescue photo sets and memorabilia. Bookings for the premiere can be made through TicketLine on 082 16789 and are on a first come first served basis.

It was more than 20 years ago, that Dr. Jane Goodall, now 75, decided to give up her career as a primatologist, as well as her private life, in order to devote all her energy to saving our endangered planet.

Invictus conquered by heart

The 2010 Soccer Worldcup is upon us in South Africa. My mood changes from mild excitement to complete ecstasy day by day as we draw closer. This is surely one of the biggest mass events ever to be hosted on the African continent and I cannot be more proud to be a South Africa during this period. We’ve come a very long way over the last 300 years or so since Jan van Riebeeck arrived in Cape Town, to the first Democratic elections in 1994, to winning the Rugby Worldcups in 1995 and 2007.

Anyway as a tribute to Bafana Bafana and the fans who have gone out in thousands today in Johannesburg and across South Africa I post this video clip for the trailer of Invictus, the film starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Francious Pienaar. Few South African films have touched me as deeply as this movie. And I am not embarrassed to say that during several scenes I became so emotional that I cried. Knowing that I was there during 1990s when all these major events that have changed our world happened, makes me feel like we can certainly accomplish anything we set our mind too. Miracles don’t always happen overnight, they may take 27 years!

And here’s the actual Invictus poem by William Ernest Henley…

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

A blind girl

There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She told her boyfriend, ‘If I could only see the world, I will marry you.’

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend.

He asked her, ‘Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?’ The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn’t expected that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: ‘Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before
They were yours, they were mine.’

This is bow the human brain often works when our status changes. Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who was always by their side in the most painful situations..

Life Is a gift. Today before you say an unkind word – Think of someone who can’ speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food – Think of someone who has nothing to eat..

Before you complain about your husband or wife – Think of someone who’s crying out to GOD for a companion.

Today before you complain about life – Think of someone who went too early to heaven…

Before whining about the distance you drive think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job – Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down – Put a smile on your face and think: you’re alive and still around..

George Carlin’s Words of wisdom

George Carlin’s Words of wisdom

This is a master piece… If you have not read it take the time to read it now… If you have read it take time to read it again… If you have read it again… Then, please consider!!!

George Carlin American stand-up comedian RIPIsn’t it amazing that George Carlin – comedian of the 70′s and 80′s – could write something so very eloquent…and so very appropriate

A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Free-ways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgement, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things.

We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete….

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Faces of Hope Foundation post-mortem

This is open letter to Leonora Moore, a personal friend of mine, who introduced me to Kerrin Black, the founder of the Faces of Hope Foundation. The essential background to this is that I was introduced by Leo to assist Kerrin Black in growing her primary business, Talent Finders, an online booking agency for performers and other people in the entertainment industry. However, my focus shifted when Kerrin asked me to help execute a fund raising event for her Faces of Foundation. The whole project turned out to be one of my worst experiences in working, on a purely voluntary basis, on a very well intentioned project – raising funds for Cancer research & treatment for people who cannot afford to help themselves financially.

Anyway here’s my a rewrite of the email I sent to Leo and Kerrin, which got no response.

Response to Denton Goodford and Levona Fredericks

There is still a bitter taste in the mouths of people who think I am abusing the name of Uitenhage High School on the Internet. Those are the same people who did not attend the annual Speech & Awards ceremony in October this year. I was there!

So here’s my response to Denton and Levona, my biggest critics on Facebook…

Do you really think I am trying to defame Uitenhage High School? All I am doing is stating the facts of what happened in October 2009 at the annual Speech & Awards evening. Were either of you there in-person to question my description of what happened? No. I can call 10-20-100 witnesses including the 5-winners of the Best All-Rounder Awards I started sponsoring from this year onwards. The easiest would be to speak directly to them, especially the winner of the Eugene Exford Leadership Awards, Charl-Jade Petrus, deputy head-boy for 2010!

Pointing out the truth of what occurred is not defaming the school or institution. And please do not talk to me about my cousin, Timothy Heynes. His leadership pales by comparison to Harry “Perd” Hendricks.

My own legacy Uitenhage High School is fortified by my achievements e.g. the CHAOS school newspaper I launched with Brad Minnaar and Theodor Adams in 1992. Since 2002 I sponsor the annual “Journalist of the Year” trophy and since this year a small cash prize with that. Since 1992 that is still going strong 17 years later! Mr Slingers would concur, and I am still very proud of this one particular accomplishment, which has become an institution in it’s own right with the learners. CHAOS has transformed the lives of every learner who has been involved in, starting with the group from 1992, which includes the 2nd editor Ghauderen Coetzee, a recent guest speaker at the Speech & Awards.

So please stand-up or shut-up. Stop talking about public and private communications regarding Uitenhage High School. It’s a public institution, and that alone gives me every right, protected by the South African Constitution to FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

Maybe you and the rest of the Ramon-haters should educate yourselves about what IS allowed or NOT allowed regarding freedom of speech in this country by reading up on the Freedom of Expression Institute. Post your own comments on Uitenhage High School group on Faceboook.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate the holidays!

BTW, read the original open letter to Uitenhage High School published on my personal blog here.

Farewell Jim Rohn The Passing of a Legend

Farewell Jim Rohn The Passing of a Legend

Jim RohnWith great sadness we share that Jim Rohn, our mentor and friend, left us December 5, 2009 for a better place.

Over the past 18 months, in his battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, Jim assured us with a smile that all is good, that he would fight until the last breath, yet he had no fear as to what would be next. Jim’s faith was as much a part of his life as his desire to inspire and challenge us all to be the best we could be and to live our dreams.

Jim’s courage in his final months and days were a testament to his message that we should all fight the good fight. He never gave up and never gave in.

Jim Rohn touched millions of lives over the past 46 years through his seminars, books, articles and CDs. He always stayed long after an event to shake hands, take pictures and sign autographs. He loved making a difference in people’s lives, that was his passion and inspiration. Yet he was also a private man who kept a small, loyal and caring inner circle. He was a tremendous friend to those who knew him.

Harold Dyke, long time close friend of Jim’s for over 55 years said it best, “As Jim is ending one life he is simultaneously being birthed into a new life. One that he has talked about over the years and anticipated with great joy in his last remaining days.”
